Stories from the trenches on the intersection between technology and reality.

Learning to program without AI is now more important than ever.

24 July 2026

AI handed unprecedented technical power in the hands of people who maybe always wanted to use technology to solve problems but they never had the capacity to actually dive in and become technical.

Now they have a tirelessly encouraging mentor, a partner in crime, at their fingertips who will happily take them by the hand and guide them through the murky waters of IT.

Many of them will walk miles in circles before they realise that their guardian, although infinitely confident can also be confidently wrong.

Those who find the right kind of balance between personal rigor and ecstasy of AI creation will be empowered to do great things for themselves and others.

I am therefore infinitely grateful that I started learning programming before the AI boom, because I now find it easier to steer it reliably where I want to go.

AI handed you keys to a sports car while you only had a driving licence for a bike. Invest some time into learning the traffic rules so we can all drive safer.
